Below is a reminder of what you need as a learner:

  • Have a valid, provisional driving licence from Great Britain or Northern Ireland
  • Be taught safe driving practices with
    - an approved driving instructor (ADI) and/ or
    - an accompanying driver. The accompanying driver has to be over 21 years old and has to have held (and still hold) a full licence for three years.
  • Display 'L' plates ('L' or 'D' plates in Wales) in a noticeable position on the front and back of the vehicle you will be driving.
  • Once your provisional licence becomes valid, you can take your theory test.
Usually, the earliest date your provisional licence can become valid is on your 17th birthday.
You can apply for the licence up to three months before your 17th birthday, nevertheless you will still have to wait until your birthday before you can take your theory test.
